Important: False statements about my personality and employment status have been circulated to others(by the management), contributing to reputational harm.

My name is Pouyan Vali. I worked here at this Chevron-branded “San Diego Car Care” station starting March 2025.
This statement explains why I am peacefully protesting at the above named location.

⭐1. What I Discovered at the Cashier Counter (scroll down to see the pictures of the microphone)

Around June 27th, 2025, I noticed a hanging cable with a microphone on it, installed directly above the cashier station, without any signs or notice to either employees or customers, despite the routine discussion of sensitive personal such as phone numbers and addresses, (customers inform the cashiers about their phonenumbers by saying it loud in order to get their points) and payment-related information at that location.
When I raised concerns, a manager told me — in front of two witnesses — that:

  • Microphones had been used for years
  • Recordings were kept for around 10 years
  • Management could listen remotely from home (several people)

He also referenced private conversations I had never told anyone, meaning audio had been heard.

It appears that this conduct has been happening at 4 other locations, owned by the company.

I am not accusing anyone of a crime — I am explaining what I personally observed and was told.

2. No Signage Until After I Spoke Up

Only after I raised concerns did two small signs suddenly appear stating that audio “may be recorded.”
There had been no signs posted before, even though customers:

  • use credit cards
  • give phone numbers for Star Rewards
  • speak privately at the counter

Customers deserve transparency about whether audio may be heard.

3. Why This Matters

California Penal Code §632 prohibits listening to private conversations without notice in places where people expect privacy.
Gas stations are not “public broadcast zones.”
People expect discretion when giving credit cards or phone numbers (Star rewards members) Penal Code § 632 CLICK HERE!

I am not making legal accusations — I am explaining why customers asked me to raise this concern.

4. What Happened After I Raised the Issue

After reporting the microphone:

  • A sign was posted
  • The microphone was not removed, but the cable was hidden on the ceiling (July 16th, 2025)
  • HR emailed me minutes before a shift saying microphones were “deactivated,” which suggests they had been active until then

These changes occurred only after I spoke up.

5. A Pattern of Retaliation Followed

After raising concerns, I experienced:

  • 6 write-ups in 4 months
  • Multiple suspensions
  • A hostile work environment
  • Being placed on administrative leave after requesting a medical accommodation
  • Stress, anxiety, and work-related medical issues

My doctor diagnosed work-related anxiety (ICD Z56.9 – Occupational Problems).
California’s FEHA laws require employers to discuss accommodations in good faith.

I requested a calm environment and no retaliation.
Instead, I was suspended again.

6. Termination and Timeline Confusion

In December, I was terminated shortly after requesting accommodations.
A termination letter was dated December 5, 2025 but was only delivered on December 8, while I remained on the work schedule until December 7. The letter was sent to my parents house and caused them unnecessary frustration and distress.

7. Why I Am Informing the Public

I am here because:

  • Customers deserve transparency
  • Employees should feel safe expressing concerns
  • Retaliation harms mental health and workplace trust

I am not here to block business, cause problems, or confront anyone.
I am exercising my First Amendment right to share what I personally experienced.

⭐8. Police Interaction (December 8th, 2025)

When I briefly entered the store to use the restroom, police were called.
The officers were respectful, confirmed I may stand on the public sidewalk, and stated no trespass order was issued.

I am remaining peaceful and cooperative.

9. I Am Not Accusing Individuals

  • I am not naming individual employees
  • I am not asking customers to take sides
  • I am not giving legal advice or discussing any legal case details

I am simply sharing my personal experience and why I felt compelled to stand here.
